I saw my first total lunar eclipse when I was about that age. My Dad told me what was happening, and we watched it together for a few minutes before he went off to do something else. But I could not stop watching. Every time I would have to break away for some reason, I would come right back and so I got to see most of it, before having to go to bed. Thinking about how long that takes, I am amazed that I had the attention span for it at that age. But it seemed like such a special thing. It didn't happen every day and that made an impression on me.
I didn't see another one until the 1990s. And that one took me totally by surprise, because I was not tuned in to Moon cycles at that time. I was walking home from work in the evening, and I noticed the full Moon hanging in the sky, and it seemed different. Then I noticed as I approached the lake, that there were people all over watching the Moon. And when I realized what was happening I got really excited. It was as if I were a little kid and had that same feeling like something really special was happening all over again.
